20 Years of Connecting the Construction Industry
It all started with an idea. And the idea was this: to transform the industry that I grew up in and love–the construction industry. And to build tools that were not only easy to use and efficient, but more importantly, worthy of the industry that builds the world around us. When we started Procore, our dream was to empower the industry that builds the communities where we live, work, and play. It’s hard to believe that this year marks 20 years into that journey.
The world we live in today no doubt looks different than it did 20 years ago. When we started Procore, the internet had not yet made it to the jobsite. This meant that for the first few years, Steve Zahm, Procore’s President and Chief Culture Officer, and I were climbing WiFi poles and installing WiFi routers on jobsites ourselves. The iPhone and iPad had not yet come out. Spider-Man, Harry Potter, and The Lord of the Rings films were setting various box office records. “How You Remind Me” by Nickelback was at the top of Billboard’s Top 100 chart. And as for myself, I had no gray hair.
Despite all that has changed, it’s wild how much has stayed the same. This industry has never stopped amazing me. In the early days when I would sit in jobsite trailers and write code alongside construction professionals, I was continually impressed by the innovation, creativity, and grit I saw. That grit is still ingrained in the industry today. No matter what challenges construction professionals face, they always find a way to build.
Procore has certainly grown. And yet, from 30 employees to almost 3,000, Procore has always felt like Procore. It has always been composed of people who have empathy for each other and our industry. We have always put people first—our customers, our partners, and our employees. And our team continues to be committed to our vision of improving the lives of everyone in construction. This means we still sit alongside construction leaders, learn from them, and leverage their feedback to deliver the best products for the job.
The scale has changed, but the spirit of what makes Procore unique has not.
I’m proud of the progress we’ve made toward our mission of connecting everyone in construction on a global platform. Today, teams both on and off the jobsite are able to communicate better to build more efficiently, safely, and with higher quality. What’s more, they can leverage the data that they are already generating to improve their businesses for years to come. They’re able to forecast better, solve more complex problems, and course correct earlier. There is incredible untapped potential here—for teams to use technology not only to transform their businesses, but the industry as a whole. We’ve come a long way, but what’s clearest to me is that we're still just getting started.
Thank you to our customers and our industry for making the seemingly impossible, possible—every day. You rebuild our homes after storms. You build our hospitals. You build the schools where our children learn. You build the infrastructure that powers and brings them all to life. And you have a lot of work ahead of you. We will be there with you every step of the way.
We are honored to work alongside you and build the software for the people who build the world.
