The People of Procore: Dani Storlie, Senior UX Design Manager

In this series, we spend time getting to know some of the people who make up the Procore culture.

Dani Storlie leads a team of seven UX Designers who design the software that Procore users engage with everyday. Dani and her team collaborate with product managers, engineers, and quality assurance engineers to bring technology to the construction industry that’s designed to create an experience that is simple, easy, and intuitive.

What captured your interest in UX?

When I first started in UX, I was enthralled by the way design connected people with technology. Design has the capability of making developments in software and hardware more approachable and enjoyable for the end-user. Nowadays, design is a market differentiator. Companies that produce great design garner deep loyalty with their customers and can quickly adapt to leveraging new innovations to solve problems for people in the industry it serves. I can’t imagine a world where I am not a part of that.

Why do you think design is relevant in the construction industry?

Technologies and the construction industry are continuously evolving. There is no replacement for creativity in technology. There will always be way to simplify, adapt, and innovate through great design for the construction industry. The paint never dries, so to speak, in either of these industries.

What’s your most memorable facepalm moment?

For the first year of knowing my now husband, I had his last name completely wrong. I thought it was Strollie, not Storlie. I figured it out only after 2 weeks of dating him when I saw a piece of mail in his apartment. I was so embarrassed. Can’t make that mistake again - I am now stuck with it.

What advice would you give to someone starting a new job on the Procore UX team?

Start by really getting to know the customers. Being able to empathize with the people we design for will be the inspiration for everything you do. I’d also say, get to know the team. We have such a wonderful group of people who love collaborating and spending time together at work and after work. It’s like a family.

What’s been one of your favorite projects and why?

Pre-qualification was by far my favorite project here at Procore. Pre-qualification is an aspect of the pre-construction process, where general contractors evaluate subcontractors to assess whether or not they are qualified to bid on a project. We designed a tools that simplified that process for both the subcontractor and the general contractor. The cross-tribe and squad (we organize our R&D department through tribes and squads) collaboration was amazing. The core team was firing on all cylinders, customers were excited about the work we were doing and I loved the freedom we had to simplify a complicated process. I can’t wait to see it come to life.
